Trucks and SUVs are the vehicles most often used for towing. While these vehicles are certainly powerful, they’re also bulky, which can make towing in certain environments a challenge. For towing in off-road conditions, UTVs are often the way to go. They are powerful enough to handle heavy cargo, and yet maneuverable enough to easily overcome most off-road obstacles. If you’re interested in using your UTV for towing, follow these tips from Atlantic Tractor.

Use a Suitable UTV

Any UTV that will be used for towing should be properly outfitted with a towing hitch or bracket. Make sure that you have a compatible hitch lined up, along with tie-downs or ratchet straps to better secure your cargo. Naturally, it’s also important to make sure that your UTV is powerful enough to handle the cargo. Exceeding your UTV’s maximum weight limits isn’t just dangerous, it’s also illegal.

Plan Your Route

Off-road towing can be difficult. Hitting the wrong obstacles in the wrong way can spell disaster. That’s why you should do a few trial runs through your prospective route. On your first run, simply ride with no trailer and observe any potential hazards along your route. Make a plan on how you might be able to overcome those obstacles, and then test that plan out by doing a second trial run with your UTV’s trailer attached but empty. Adjust your strategy until you’re sure that you’ll be able to safely haul your cargo.

Driving Tips

When it’s finally time to do the actual towing job, take things slower than you normally would. Be cautious during turns and around difficult terrain. Even weight distribution and securing your cargo will make towing easier.
