A dull lawn mower blade results in a rougher cut and a less efficient machine overall. Sharpening a lawn mower blade can be tricky, but the benefits speak for themselves. Follow this step by step guide from the experts at Atlantic Tractor, and your lawn mower’s blade should be sharpened in no time.

Safely Remove the Blade

You don’t want your lawn mower to accidentally start while you’re removing the mower blade. That’s why you should remove your mower’s spark plug before you start removing the blade. We recommend marking the bottom of your mower’s blade with paint or tape so you have an easier time putting it back once you’ve sharpened it. To remove your lawn mower’s blade, tilt the mower on its side and place a 2x4 board between the deck skit and the blade. If your setup is correct, the blade should resist the board when you remove the bolt. A breaker bar or long-handled wrench should be used to unscrew the bolt itself so that you can remove the blade.

Inspect the Condition of the Blade

Once you’ve removed the lawn mower’s blade, start inspecting it. It’s very useful to have a spare lawn mower blade on hand for this step. Not only will you be able to compare your current lawn mower blade against the fresh blade, but you can simply replace your current blade with the spare if you decide that your current blade is too worn out. Ideally, your lawn mower blade should have a straight cutting edge and a thick trailing edge. If the blade is dented or chipped, it’s time to replace it.

Sharpen the Blade

Your sharpening file should be at least 10 inches thick. Start your strokes at the top of the mower blade’s cutting edge and push downward in a single firm, smooth motion. After between twenty and thirty strokes, compare your current blade to your spare blade and decide if more sharpening is in order.

Balance the Lawn Mower Blade

Lastly, you’ll need to balance your lawn mower blade to ensure an even cut. To do this, put a nail through a board and then set the blade’s bolt hole on the nail. If the mower blade starts to tip to one side or the other, file that side down. The process of balancing a lawn mower blade can be time-consuming, so be patient and remember to only make small adjustments at a time.
