The Material
A great place to start is thinking about the material you will be baling. Consider the size and density of the material as well as the volume and speed of the baler. Know that some high-output balers and energy-efficient balers are not able to produce heavy bales. Instead, they either operate at a higher cost per hour or make a volume and number of bales that are not as cost-effective for transport. As you look at options, pay extra attention to the cost per baled ton and don't forget to include operation and wire costs.
Square vs Round Baler
Balers come in two main categories: square and round. Each of these categories has various subcategories full of different specialties and capabilities.
Both approaches offer unique benefits. Square balers are able to stack and transport bales more easily. But the large square bales can't be stored outside in wet climates (they will end up molding out). You'll need to store them somewhere they can be shielded from the weather, such as a barn or somewhere covered by a waterproof tarp. Round balers are able to pack the hay more tightly. These balers end up being more efficient to operate.
Size of Operation
Finally, think about how much crop you'll be baling. If you are a smaller operation, you can get by with a smaller baler. If you are a large operation, you'll benefit from larger square balers that harvest more cost-effectively on a per-ton basis.
