Beginnings and Innovations
The J.I. Case Threshing Machine Company was founded in 1842 by Jerome I. Case, who started out by manufacturing small hand-powered threshers in Wisconsin and soon established the Racine Threshing Machine Works after shifting base to Racine.
By 1869, Case built his first portable steam engine used to power wheat threshers. His invention received international recognition and opened up opportunities in the foreign market. This was followed by the invention of the first self-propelled traction steam engine that made Case the world’s leading steam engine manufacturer by 1886. The brand continued to set benchmarks manufacturing farming equipment and introduced their first all-steel threshing machine in 1904.
The company witnessed an exponential increase in sales during the first World War as many farmers had joined the fight and the remaining farmers needed to fill that void. By the Second World War, Case was directly supporting war efforts by supplying parts for airplanes, bombs, and even tank doors to the US and allied forces. In 1942, Case manufactured the first self-propelled combine and continued to expand its market share in the agriculture industry.

Mergers and Acquisitions
The latter half of the 20th century saw Case buying other manufacturers and Case itself was acquired by the Tenneco Company of Texas in 1984. Tenneco merged the International Harvester agriculture division with J.I. Case, creating Case International which would later become Case IH.In 1999, Case merged with New Holland N.V. to become CNH Global. CNH Global continues to manufacture cutting edge farming and agricultural equipment under the Case IH banner and has specially carved a niche for itself in the production of biodiesel-friendly engines and new autonomous tractor technology.
